We are smack in the middle of our first week of classes. The students arrive each morning from 8 to 12 for their respective classes of Grammar, Language and Application, Mayans of Yesterday and Today (an anthropological look at the historical and contemporary culture of Yucatan) and
Poder y Palabra (Power and the Word, a look at the political environment of Mexico to explore the context in which Yucatan is situated). All of the classes are, of course, taught in Spanish, and the students have pretty hefty packets of material for the duration of the course.

It's not all work and no play. In addition to the academic classes, the students have all had their first sessions of dance classes (Caribbean Rhythms and Jarana, pronounced
ha-ra-nah, the traditional dance of this area). Half of the group has had a tour through the city's cathedral where they were able to climb all the way up to the bell tower for a view of the city that many visitors never have the chance to see. We also have a pre-hispanic music workshop scheduled for this evening and a field trip to another archaeological site (and perhaps even a cave or two) this coming Saturday and a Christmas festival Monday evening!
